I work at a small architecture/consulting firm (3 women, 5 men). All three of the girls I work with like to take their shoes off and walk around the office barefoot, one of the guys does it too, and no one ever says anything about it. I’m not upset or offended by it, I’m just not used to it because I used to work at a big corporate architecture firm that would not have approved of this. Does anyone else ever do this, and is it usually more common for women to do it than men? Thanks
In New Zealand everyone is barefoot LOL

This is a film me and my friend made about the Sarphatistraat Offices by Architect Steven Holl, during our study trip to Amsterdam, November 2006. (Its my little tribute to Bladerunner, though its nothing like BR!) You would be right in guessing am a Architecture student! I’m currently in my 3rd year at the Manchester School of Architecture! Enjoy the film!!!

Nanotechnology has been used by a New York design office to change a sheet of standard office paper into a flexible surface that can conduct electricity. The work was done by Decker Yeadon LLC, a firm that specializes in finding novel applications for advanced materials, such as smart materials and nanomaterials. They recently demonstrated the conductivity of the office paper by using it as a conduit to power an LED.
Decker Yeadon first created a liquid solution that they’re referring to as a NanoINK. The ink that they made primarily consists of carbon nanotubes, deionized water, and a chemical surfactant that helps the nanotubes disperse in the water. The nanotubes they used are only 1.5 nm in diameter, which is smaller than a DNA molecule. Their NanoINK was used to impart the electrical properties of the nanotubes onto substrates that they coated with the ink, including cotton fabric and paper. The work opens up a number of possibilities for applications, in architecture and other design disciplines, that might take advantage of the printable, conductive ink.

Hi, I am looking for a good architecture computer program. I design kennels and dog daycares, and need a program that has different flooring and walling options, as well as can build half walls. A program that can do office design can work as well. I can use a program that does home designs as long as they have many different options as far as materials go. Any suggestions? Something that is somewhat easy to master as well. Thanks! Also include a link where i can purchase if possible (ie: amazon, circuit city, etc).
Rather than buy anything, have you tried Google Sketchup?
It is a FABULOUS program that I use all the time so that homeowners will know what we are planing and that they can play with themselves. It is free, very easy to learn and surprisingly powerful.

I’m assuming that a career in architecture means being stuck behind a desk or even in a cubicle most of the time, right? If not, what else does the job entail?
Interns and draftsmen spend a lot of time behind computers – Architects spend more time interacting with clients, finding leads, site observation, doing paper work, and think – then again, I am generalizing.

Green building (also known as green construction or sustainable building) is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle: from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and demolition. This practice expands and complements the classical building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort.[1]
Although new technologies are constantly being developed to complement current practices in creating greener structures, the common objective is that green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by:
* Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources
* Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity
* Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation[1]
A similar concept is natural building, which is usually on a smaller scale and tends to focus on the use of natural materials that are available locally.[2] Other related topics include sustainable design and green architecture. Green building does not specifically address the issue of the retrofitting existing homes.
